connecticut music fans are largely devoid of emotion
I’m in Connecticut for the holiday season. Fucking cool.
My old band Bushwhack played a show last night at this cool-ass all-ages club we used to always play called The Space, in Hamden, and naturally I was excited to attend. Since I’m now 23 and live in Massachusetts, I hardly know any of the people who go to shows in Hamden, so it was interesting to see what people are like at shows here.
I sort of felt bad for the bands, to be honest - all brought tons of energy (on a Thursday night, nonetheless!), but I was one of perhaps 5 folks in the audience truly responding to that energy. At shows, I (and others) enjoy the ability to unwind and rock out to good music as a means of catharsis, expression and fun.
This may be tasteless or unnecessarily judgmental, but I noticed a few things about CT youth. I could be wrong, but either:
- They have it so well that they have no need to unwind at rock shows
- They are devoid enough of emotion to lack the ability to unwind at rock shows
- They are too socially inept to convey the emotions the carry to others
I actually do feel pretty bad for saying that, but it kind of bothered me.
Also of (a more positive) note:
- It was Frank’s birthday. Happy birthday, good sir.
- I forgot how hilarious and fun and awesome the Anti-Dentites were. Yes, there’s a band named after the Seinfeld joke. And they opened their set with a menorah lighting.
- New band While Stella Sleeps is pretty badass. Brilliant alternating vocals and pretty alt-rock. Check them out.
these are my favorite albums of 2011
I haven’t posted on here in a while, so what better way to start doing so with an incredibly stereotypical blog entry?
This was actually a pretty awesome year for music, and you should get these albums now if you haven’t heard them yet. I couldn’t decide on 10, so I listed 15.
- Radiohead, The King of Limbs
- M83, Hurry Up We’re Dreaming
- Battles, Gloss Drop
- Fleet Foxes, Helplessness Blues
- Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
- Fucked Up, David Comes To Life
- Wild Beasts, Smother
- Parts + Labor, Constant Future
- Childish Gambino, Camp
- Steven Wilson, Grace For Drowning
- Panda Bear, Tomboy
- Hooray for Earth, True Loves
- I Break Horses, Hearts
- The Roots, Undun
- Drake, Take Care
I’ll make a playlist of these albums and throw it on Spotify for all of y’all.
This weekend is full of work. I don’t want to talk about it.
Getting me through it is lots of Red Bull (ha!), and strangely enough, angsty metal music. I haven’t listened to this shit in a long time, and most of it is total crap (yet great for nostalgia’s sake).
Deftones are an exception to that rule. I am still amazed by the creative and beautiful ideas they put into their music, that set them apart. This video is a stripped-down version of “teenager”, from White Pony, one of my favorite heavy records of all time. Absolutely beautiful.

These are lyrics I wrote a while ago, which I will most likely use for my next upcoming music project (which is still a surprise, so don’t worry, you’re not missing much).
head to toe in bandage
you did this for me
new sensations in my eyes
i don’t recall a thing
i really want to thank you but i don’t know your name
sharpest needle
hardest fall
it softens to a grey
you don’t need to tell me
i can feel the pain
you don’t need to tell me
i can feel the pain go away
you don’t need to stay here standing in the rain
shiver closely in my arms
now
that’s the only way
i don’t want to leave you
but i shouldn’t stay
you can tell me all the things that no one else would say
you don’t need to tell me
everything’s okay
you don’t need to tell me
everything’s okay for today
back in action?
I’m gonna start writing on this blog again. I always enjoyed it but ran into a period of time where I didn’t have time to share the few things I actually wanted to say and share.
That’s gonna start happening I think. It’s been a really intense, interesting and exciting past few months.

I’m really bad about posting on this guy lately, and that’s been due to various things, and one of them is because TEAM FORTRESS 2 IS AWESOME. It’s free, and it’s for your computer. If you don’t like first-person shooters, or if you don’t like video games at all, then just watch this and change your mind NOW.

CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO THIS

Haven’t posted on here in a while, so here’s an awesome picture of my parents’ awesome dog.
This is a piece I wrote while finishing up my degree at Northeastern University. It’s constructed entirely from recordings of the human voice and creaking doors. It kind of reflects a darker cynicism I felt towards a few things at the time it was composed, but more closely represents some personal demons that I was trying to get rid of at the time.
It’s a teensy bit scary.
